Need a bit of advice again!
 

This time re Radio, I do not listen to radio at all have not done for years, had a call from a customer today that is complaining that he has no reception, and wanted me to put an Arial up for him, but he had already strung a long wire around the shop, I have noticed that my car radio is pretty naf while not so long ago it was good, I only use it on a journey to get traffic info, so has the system changed? my customer has a DAB FM set is this OK now or have they changed? I understand that a DAB aerial has to be vertical and not horizontal. If he has strung a long wire around the shop, he could be missing the signal.

I sorted it by moving the whole unit and aerial to another room.

In the house I use my DAB radio via my Denon Tuner / CD player unit I bought it used, it is about 6 years old. It has AM,FM etc but I don't use them just the DAB band.

I messed about with the Antenna that came with the unit, it was essentially a piece of wire about 5 feet long that I Blu Tacked onto the highest point in our Conservatory. I found that I could only get a few stations so I tried plugging in an old Indoor TV aerial I had. This looks like a flat vertical bit of plastic about 10" long x 2.5" wide stuck into a base with a lead it cost about £10 from Asda 5 years or so ago - it was useless as a TV aerial .

I placed the aerial at a height of about 5 ft where it sits on top of some room furniture (an Ikea CD rack). This provides a really good signal on DAB with plenty of channels. Where I live there is a dip so Nottm Transmitter us hopeless but Sutton Coldfield is a very strong signal.

Last time I had a proper AM/FM Aerial was about 25 years ago it was on my roof and worked well but when VM started to supply these signals I used their signal instead. VM stopped this service when they provided Radio Stations via the TV.

The AM/FM Aerial was purchased from local Electrical Shop in Derby - RF POtts on Babington Lane - its an Aladins Cave I took it down after some high winds as the bracket was coming away from the wall where it was mounted near our bathroom flat roof.

I don't listen to radio either if I can possibly help it. I stream all my music. However for real time traffic news you can just use Google maps Rick. It will give you real time delays and alternative routes and free.
My sat nav does it too .

My wife has looked into this for playing music over the PA in the large workshop she used to be office manager for. This was for the guys on the shop floor.
It's referred to as broadcasting music in the public domain and is surprisingly taken very seriously by the authorities.
Pete is correct, you need a licence for this.
It's cost is based on the number of people (employees and foot-fall) listening at any one time.
It isn't cheap, and the fines can be massive.
Her workshop was spot inspected once (can you believe that!). She had gone down the route of 'doing the right thing' and enquired about a license, and had a random visit from an inspector to see if music was being broadcast already.
Streamed (stored) music is also considered broadcasting and infringes artists rights if played to the public.
Suffice to say, she didn't proceed with the license application.

we had the airwave coppers just turn up and asked to see the music licanse as radio was on,no we did not have one and we had to turn it off untill a licanse was got,we never did but it was a purge on places they had hered was playing it.was many years ago that was.

You need a vertical antenna as high as poss, with low loss cable to get effective digital radio signal I believe.....

Anyway, why bother if they have broadband just use that for their radio needs :thumbs

They did have broadband but not now, hence the need for DAB radio, but not really my field, Rick
