It's coming up to MOT time again.

It's coming up to MOT time and I know I need to do a few bits, which the weather has put on hold. So today, I decided to start giving the car a going over....

Firstly, I knew that the front calipers were tight, and when I checked them out, they had taken out the front pads in 7K miles, so I fitted two new calipers, and front pads. Then bled the whole system right through, to do a full fluid change as well. While doing that, I also changed the clutch fluid, as it had some black colour to it.

Next was a an Oil and filter change, and for the first time in all the years of owning, not a drop was spilt... well until I tried to re-fill it, and the container "Glugged" sending a huge glob of oil all over the front of the engine, which then dribbled onto the driveway...:doh

While checking and cleaning the rear brakes, I spotted that the exhaust pipe has a split running from the back box up to the top of the rear axle.. Bother... Need to order that now...

Gave the underside a check over, and everything looks good, so that's a result...

Lastly, I decided to weld the sill, where I had an advisory last year. Been meaning to do it all year, but kept forgetting... What a pig, it is right under the hinge of the rear door, and because of the gap took a lot of work to build up a weld to bridge it. Not only that, but the sealant I used kept catching fire...

Did the fuel filter last month, when I replaced the fuel lines, so did not need to do that, and cleaned the air filter, which had a surprising number of dead flies, wasps and moths in it.

So apart from the exhaust, the only other thing I need to do is find a bad electrical connection, as the secondary battery is all working fine and showing up to 14 volts, but the main battery is only showing 12.4 volts, when the engine is running. I think it must be the earth wire, but not got as far as checking it yet.

Feeling knackered now...

Good luck with the test but it sounds like you have a good hold of it all.

My wife is a bit bothered about putting Terranos in for tests after the new regs come in in May. She’s seen something about any smoke at all and it’ll fail, not a good test for a terrano that is it.

Hmmm... lucky mine is 27th of April then... could be the last T2 on the road if that is true :doh

Do not worry there is a rule that retrospective updates do not apply if that has changed then the whole country will be be in uproar, Rick

Hope you’re right Rick but I have no trust in the nanny state system that likes to keep on squeezing money out of the population.
Not that I’m cynical though:lol

Good luck with the MOT :thumb2 sounds like you are well ahead of the game though sorting out those jobs.

Mine is due in July but I will be putting it though in the next few weeks as I want to sell it with a full 12 month ticket. That's of I do sell it though.

Good luck, but it does sound like you are well prepared.....:thumb2

She passed...

1 advisory, the usual, light corrosion on the brake pipes... She has had that pretty much every year and even before I got her.

Did have a close one though, I bought a module to control the DLR's properly, so they dip rather than go out when the side/head lights are on, but it also has inputs that allowed them to strobe when the horn is pressed, and also flash on and off in time to the indicators..

Turns out, flashing with the indicators is a big no-no, despite having seen several new cars that seem to do it. Luckily, he asked me if there was an easy way to disconnect them, and as I used waterproof plugs and sockets to wire it all in, it was just a case of unplugging it.

Problem solved:doh

Well done......preparation is the key.....:thumb2

Good news indeed.

Which DLR kit have you fitted?

I got these DLR's, for both the T2's, they are very nicely made, and super bright.

their only problem is, they go out when the side lights come on, rather than dim.

I got this control box, which pulse modulates the lights to dim them, plus has the other functions I mentioned.

The DTRL's that I fitted to my BMW go out once dip beam or main is selected, the power runs from the ignition circuit with a cheap e-bay relay to the lamps with the one wire to the dip circuit to put them out. As these units are not overly bright anyway I have lived with them as they are.

My second aftermarket DTLR fitting was on our Jeep, it took three different sets of DTRL's before I found some reliable ones luckily for me I got refunds on my first two sets. All looked very similar in design but the last set seem to be okay and have been working for about 9 months without the dreaded flicker disease!

The ones I fitted on my Jeep dim rather than go out when sidelights or head lamp dip/main is selected. My first e-bay relay that was voltage actuated burnt out as the wattage was close to the relay limit. I fitted a higher load relay when the first one failed with an extra relay to handle the lamp feed. A bit over designed but it works.

Just shows Clive keeping on top is the key, and no emission issues, well done, Rick

True...

I was given an MOT tip before I even owned a diesel. I drive the last 2 miles to the MOT centre in 2nd, at about 4K revs, it's supposed to clear the exhaust a bit, and does seem to work, as I know mine does burn oil.
