I'll shortly be fitting my new CCTV system to the house that we've purchased and I've started to obtain other bits and bobs ready for fitment.

I spent more hours than I care to admit online researching the hell out of all cameras in general. I really didn't know what was available out there and what was best for your money etc, not only that, I even started getting down as far into what CMOS sensors were used in the cameras etc etc before making an educated decision on a Hikvision 4 Channel DS-7204HTHI-K1 DVR with x4 DS-2CE78U8T-IT3 8MP Turret Cameras.

This is on my to do list, got loads of cables part way run under floors upstairs. I’ve had Hikvision recommendations from several people including a friend that fits systems.
Are you using CAT5 POE?

I'm not finished yet :naughty

More incoming, I'll be doing a full run down from unboxing to installation

Watching this with real interest, I am having an extension built and so now is the perfect time to install cameras. I was planning mains and cat 6 to each location.
Some one has suggested POE is this a possibility and do the cameras suggested support it, if not what cable is used to connect / power them.

I went for LOrex based POE Utra HD 4k system with 2TB NVR
 

Someone on here recommended Lorex so I went for a fairly basic system but with plenty of scope for later upgrade.

My Lorex NVR has a 2TB memory with Ultra HD 4 K 8 Channel System POE based system.

I only have two Lorex night vision cameras a LNB 8005 with night vision 8MP Ultra HD, plus one motorised camera LNB 8973 they are both colour but will switch to B&W in very low light conditions.

Scope for cloud storage with more at extra cost, my NVR saves a rolling 28 days of footage - plenty for me.

Secure access to system that can be viewed on phone or PC. Took me a while to set it up, still haven't managed to sort out the free cloud storage. Gave a lot of thought to camera locations & NVR location.

System has lots of options for privacy screening etc, alerts to your mobile or via e-mail.

POE is definatally the easiest way to go, as you do not need to run any more wires than just the Ethernet cable. Most POE cameras allow you to use either POE, or an external power supply.

The great thing is, you can get POE hubs, so you can run a single Ethernet cable to a specific location, and then using the POE hub break out to several cameras from that spot saving you having to run several cables to cameras in a remote location.

I have 8 cameras, 2 are straight off of the recorder, 4 more are off a Hub up in the loft, one is on a wireless extender in the garage, but that camera is on it's own power supply as the extender does not support POE, and the last camera is a cheap little PTZ wireless camera.

I've been reading your replies guys and even the guy that has sold me the system via Amazon who I have had to get in touch with via telephone has recommended that we should use CAT5. The system came with a 30M RG59 or "Shotgun" cable as it's referred to as per camera, I intend to install it with this and if I have any issues I'll go CAT5 at a later date using the existing cable runs.

Back to the DVR for now though, I spec'd mine to deliberately come without a Hard Drive as I wanted to spec my own. I'd been reading online that Western Digital make purpose built Surveillance Hard Drives for DVR's :D A bit more research lead and some number crunching lead me to buy a 2TB Western Digital Purple 3.5" HDD which apparently when being developed was tuned to work seamlessly with the Hikvision chipset :cool:

Recording 24/7 at 8MP 1080p 4K I will be able to store 14 days worth of footage :thumb2

I've also done a few dry runs in terms of locating cameras and working out where I want them to go on the house, the route of cables and the angle of lenses.

I'll get some more pics and screenshots etc as the cameras start to go up and I configure the system along the way :thumb2

i built a mini xp com with a 4 way camera board 4 hd n vision camers all from china and an old monitor mounted up on a shelf,just left it running 24/7 total cost around 50.
i supplied a stabbing evidence that it court and an arson attack the police said mine was the only everdence they had.

Grabbed a little bit more time to plan this setup some more on the weekend in between lumping engines around the country :lol

Having seen another setup similar to mine that has been installed on another house on the estate I have found that you can buy bases for the cameras to sit on rather than having the cameras mounted directly to the wall.

These help to store the cables in the recess behind so that you only have to run the thinner RG59 cable through the wall rather than running the camera loom through the wall as it is a very short cable and some houses may have walls too thick to get it to come through from the outside.

They also give the original camera a lot better appearance in my eyes, I spec'd the system white deliberately so they stood out against the brickwork on the house, a visual deterrent is the best deterrent.

Lastly, because they are a few inches thick they space the camera from the wall giving a much better angle than can be gained from mounting directly to the wall and allowing a much better range of movement.

I have brought 5 of these as they were a cheap set bundled new on eBay, new you are looking to pay £21 each but my 5 worked out at £14 a piece :thumb2

I've decided I'll only be using 3 though as the 4th camera that will be going on the side of the house above the apex of the garage which will have the best view of the street and an arm will be going up so I have the option of upgrading to a motorised one in the future that you can control live via the app on the phone or at a web page :thumb2

I'd consider a siren too. Hoody wearing yobs won't necessarily care if seen on a camera but something making a lot of noise might put them off. Not nice but they may swerve your gaff for someone elses that doesn't have a siren....

Don't worry about a siren mate that's already been taken care of. We're also considering a 3M Security Glass installation on the rear patio doors and looking to buy a system a little more sophisticated than the Verisure ZeroVision system at some point :thumb2

Had to Google it pal. The fog system? Jeez, never seen anything like that

I don't want to go with Verisure though as the demo was terrible. The bad thing about that system is the fact that only Verisure can activate the fog system and will only do that when they have verified there are real intruders in the house via the video link PIR's that come as part of the system.

A few of the lads came around last night and we decided to crack on and get a camera up!!!

I picked my spot on the wall outside and did some more measurements to make sure we weren't going to come through the bedroom wall etc :lol I worked out roughly where it would come in via the wall in the loft and had to clamber across all of the trusses and pull some insulation out of the way.

We measured the RG59 female connections O/D which was 16mm, we drilled a 20mm hole which turned out to be perfect :thumb2

The first issue arose when I tried to mate the camera to the base and it looks like due to poor manufacturing tolerances the holes didn't line up so I've had to drill 3 new holes, I'm going to have to complain!!!
