Patrol Engine Swap
This subject is always lurking in the corners of my mind...
I know that some of you guys have had 1st hand experience and others are very knowledgeable, so although I don't have the money to undertake such a task at the moment, I thought I might start a thread where the collective knowledge of this group could be focused! I look forward to your input! |

Engine Options.
I think Engine options is a logical place to start!
Given that my Patrol has 158hp & 280 lb/ft of torque (From factory) from its 4 cylinder engine, more of both is obvious. Sure I would love to shoehorn a 6.6 Duramax engine in there, but fear this might be unrealistic... Especially here in the UK. Most popular options I see at the moment are the BMW's M57 and the Merc's OM606... There's still a lot of options with these two engines as they've had quite a few versions over the years. Power starts around 170hp for the earlier models ranged up to 235hp (ish) in the newest M57 & 130hp to 170hp (ish) for the OM606... Obviously tuneable, but from the off the M57 looks more favourable. |

I guess I have to think about the availability of parts too... My 1st thought when thinking about suitable engines was the TDV6 that I had in my Discovery 3. That had 188hp and 325lb/ft, it could shift the D3 along nicely. For something like that, all the conversion parts would have to be specially made. |

I'm going OM606 Beautiful smooth engine and extremely strong out of the box. Stock engine spec and high milers still good for 500bhp before any expensive internals .
Engines are reasonably easily sourced but the pumps need to be binned. Get the early mechanical pump. That as stock is good for for well over 200bhp However, spend £700 and get the pump done by Dieslel pump UK or a tad more for a Meken version , and you've got fuel for 450 bhp You'll need a bigger turbo ofcourse but again DPUK have all that stuff off the shelf. All the above assuming you want big power, if not then stock 606 is over 200bhp in mechanical mode. No ecu, just 6 silky smooth german pistons getting very angry very quickly Adaptor kits avail for your truck too. All rolling road tested and proven. Not sure on the BMW lump but the 606 is lighter than the 4.2 nissan lump I've taken out. |

Jeep WK2 engine MB based unit
How about the above engine standard form is 237 bhp with 410 lb ft torque lots of chip upgraded on the market.
Bound to be a few engines on the used market. I have the more pedestrian 215 bhp unit with 510 Nm of torque in my WK1 it has is plenty of Oooo mph for me! |

Now that's what I'm talking about... Some good insights right there!
I will have to start learning about pumps and such as I'm not sure what you can and can't use with what engine! More power & torque is what I'm after... Not that the benchmark is set particularly high! |

Oi, that's my line
The big difference is the electrickery needed to run these modern engines. The om606 is direct injection. No need for ecu or owt. Mine is 179 ( or was when it left the factory ) take the cat off and open up the zorst and immediately get 190 bhp. You can buy a s/h mechanical pump for about 250 quid. There are the element kits too for about 170 but you'll need to do the work yourself. I wouldn't fancy that Old skool squeeze squirt bang = OM606 M75 and others need a stand alone ECU to run them OR some proper work on the donor loom to do :/ |

I picked one up from Leicester and drove it to Derby - it was brand new so could not gun it but the torque was awesome. 306 bhp with 700 Nm or 516 lb ft of torque low down at 2000 rpm! |

Just had a message from DieselPumpUK... They Reckon the Auto is a no go!
They have only converted, or have conversion kits for manuals! |
