Default 1999 Terrano Extreme

Hi

Just bought my first 4x4 to lug my daughter's horse around. Looked at a few different makes , either too expensive or didn't like the drive (trooper) ,wandered all over the place . Seems a little sluggish don't know what to look at first any ideas ?

How do and welcome
Any history with it? Private buy or stealer ?
Worth checking fuel filter assuming no engine management light on. Does the MIL come on at start up by the way?

bet it needs new filter, MAf cleaning etc etc....as for wondering, hmmm....bushes to check, tyres and so on. I find these cars pretty solid on the road for a 4x4, mine certainly doesnt wonder...

Hi clivvy
The Terrano is fine on the road it was the trooper that seemed to be floating all over the place. I'll get the filters changed and clean out the MAF sensor. Can I use contact cleaner or should I buy a MAF cleaner?

Yeah it came from a stealer , I did feel a bit peeved that they couldn't fix the rev counter , apparently their diagnostic tool was too new ?????? Sounds like a cop out to me . The MIL does come on and go off again. It does have some history but there's a gap between the services.

Ah more info MIL comeing on and off indicates a reasonable fault so read the codes, get your stealer to get the right adaptor and sort it , it is his job. OR get a load of bucks back
In the download section it tells you how to read the codes with a paper clip
Fault prob MAF , contact cleaner carefully applied worth a try

When I say it comes on and goes off , it's only on when I turn the ignition on and goes off as soon as it starts . Sorry didn't mean it comes on when the engine is running . One other thing , the mount for the front bumper is very rusty, actually quite a bit of it isn't there anymore . Can this be replaced or is it a welding job?
Thanks for all your help

Front bumpers are over rated and dont do anything important, so a bit of welding will sort that out. Even i did mine i cant weld for toffee (Yet).

Dont be worried of taking it to bits they very owner friendly when you get the apart. most take em off and put a nice steel one on so you can bin all the old stuff anyway.

Makeitfit knows them inside out, if he says its ok then its OK .

Just get your self some tie wraps and bobs your uncle.

sounds like your MiL is fine then, and I suspect power issues were the MAF, perhaps its the original one? I always use electrical contact cleaner on mine, sometimes I will even leave it to soak, but I havent had to do this at all since getting a spare from MakeItFit, who supplies good quality used parts at an affordable price

as for the stealer diagnostic tool, I bet hes got the newer one thats all, where as on yours you need the older ODB..er......2. i think....anyway, I have one and hooks up to the lappy and tells you shed loads of information about whats going on, helped me fix my major issues a few months back. Cost about £8 i think, then a few quid for the correct serial/usb adapter for the laptop.

Thanks for a your help . Coming off the drive today on full lock there was a quite load clunk , am I right in thinking it's the steering stop caps. There does seem to be quite a bit of corrosion under the car but it only seems to be surface . Can anybody recommend a company local to me in Whitstable where I can hopefully get it sorted?

Ah the old steering stop klunk
Simple fix that Zippy would normally tell you is delt with simply by applying a finger of fudge (grease) onto the steering stop thingy
Enjoy
