Default 2.7 or 3.0?

Hi everyone new on here , i am a mechanic , maseratis & ferraris!, managed to avoid working any length on diesels .
I had a 2.7 51 plate terrano as a company car loved it but milage got to nearing 200k and did a deal to change for a subaru imp , nice but no terrano , so got me self a cheap (£650) mavarick '97 to smoke about in , now i've been looking at terranos again so whats better 2.7 or 3.0 ?
Thoughts would be good
Cheers Russ

3.0

Tax is not much more expensive, but the engine is more powerful and more economical. You don't hear too many complaints on here, but then again the 3.0 is much rarer.

I think If I had a choice, id go for the 3.0 despite my experience being with the 2.7. Im fairly sure the 3.0 engine is as reliable though, but hopefully some of the guys on here will know better.

Both got pros and cons. 3.0 is more powerful, and better on juice. 2.7tdi Has no cambelt or chain to worry about, which for me is . Also runs on veg oil which for me is

A customer of mine is just having his gearbox refurbed on his 54 plate 3.0ltr
and then selling it
it is in very well looked after condition but knowing him he will want top dollar.

bit torn a 3.0 in my troll, had the known issues HGF, cracked pistons, was due all the turbo sensors so traded in went back to ol' faithful 2.7tdi our second terrano.

to be fair by time 3.0 went in terrano issues were sorted. but parts are more expensive
and open heart surgery can be double the book hours.

suppose if factor the better performance and mpg might be worth a punt oh and
insurance will be higher.

suppose could look at 2.7 and get a chip or re-map to about same output.

or could just use loud pedal more....

Not had a 2.7 but I'm really happy with my 3.0

Got it with a brand new turbo fitted and new clutch & transfer box. Not without a couple of minor issues, but majority niggles are just every day common ones to both the 2.7 and 3.0 from what I've read here.

I like the bit of extra power and better MPG the 3.0 gives me and that was the swaying factor.

Insurance and tax didn't come out with all that much difference overall when I took everything into consideration too.

Mine's been in to local mechanic recently to have the belt tensioner looked at and he said the 3.0 is as reliable as they come - should go on and on and on. I have no first hand experience of this as yet! lol

The guys here know WAY more than me as this is my first T2. When I've searched for parts, 2.7 bits are more readily available (and cheaper), but then there seems to be plenty that are shared between the two, so not all bad.

It depends what your priorities are. You can run the 2.7 on veg oil whereas the 3.0 you can't, so that pretty much takes care of the MPG argument I guess!

Me, I'd buy a 3.0 again

More than happy with my 2.7TDI. The 3.0 does have more power.Maximum speed limit is 70mph,anyway.Mine would easily exceed that should i want to.I don't do any towing
so extra power is not a issue for.
But one point,200k is not a awful lot,if it has been looked after/serviced.Good luck with your Ford Maverick.

For me the 2.7 td ( non intercooler) is more reliable than the 2.7tdi ( intercooler) or the 3.0 litre.
Low technology, so less to go wrong.

The 2.7 td gives more on road hours than garage hours, you spend more time driving it than working to pay for repairs.

Re the 3.0 litre, the clutch is under a greater strain and so is the gearbox, I know the clutch is upgraded, but not sure about the gearbox, there have been a few issues here.
As mentioned, the earlier Patrol 3 litre engines had a few issues, but resolved when fitted to the Terrano.

More important is the history, oil changes, general fluid changes etc, and the dreaded tin worm can get a hold in places.

I've got a 3.0, so biased.

Downers? It doesn't run on veg oil (presumably cos of the pump?). Theres way more info and experience on here of the 2.7.

Uppers? The bonnet has a bigger air scoop and looks better
Ude the loud pedal, and the back end spins up and steps out. (this can also be a downer...)

MPG? the difference must be negligible in the real world. I tend to drive it like a granny, unless there's a tinted window corsa next to me, and the MPG is crap

the 3.0 makes a great noise too
