Strange Tyre wear on front of WJ ?
The front tyres on the Grand Cherokee have started to have a strange wear issue after 28k miles.
It is mainly on the front outer edges but extends to the centre in places, the block part of the tread is ripping off in small chunks. (Goodyear A/T Wranglers) The tyres replaced identical ones that wore normally. The tracking is good, no suspension wear shockers are okay. My garage say it's from driving on hard stone chippings and is as a result of driving with almost full lock causing the stones to cut the tread. They reckon it's common on Range Rovers. The local tyre depot I use scratched their heads a bit - they ruled out tracking as the tyre is actually quite smooth across the width with even tread wear depthwise. They thought it might be a combination of uV degradation of the tyres (made in 2017) and turning on hard road surfaces. Anyone here had this problem when off roading etc ? |

I get a bit of Rock rash from off roading but never had chunks coming off the tyres.
That sounds like delamination of the tyre. Never used Goodyear wrangler tyres so can't really comment on how they wear. |

Tyre Delamination.

Am beginning to think it's a tyre issue, I missed a year out in the miles covered they have covered around 24.-26K miles since June 2017. Will do a front to rear swop and monitor them over the next few weeks. |

Another thought is maybe they are a summer tyre not all season which would explain the difference between how they are wearing as they are a different compound

One Wheel nut will not shift
Quote:
My impact wrench will not shift either it so will wait until my mate turns up this afternoon and try my big socket lever. I will hold it in whilst he gives it some muscle. Tyre depot or garage have obviously over tightened it! |

I hate locking wheel nuts.
We failed with a 3 ft socket bar. Mates Milwaukee Impact Wrench saved the day - locking nut is cracked on the key head so will bin them and have normal nuts all round.
The only people they seem to frustrate imho is vehicle owners - rather like radio codes when they were popular. |
