Default nats help needed please

hi and thanks for letting me part of this forum, im hoping someone can help me, ive recently bought a 2004 Nissan patrol 3.o td, lovely drive and I feel like king of the road in it, or should I say I did, until I attempted to replace the stereo with an after market one as the original didn't work, it turned on but no sound, annoying so me and a friend went ahead and took on the task of replacing it with an after market stereo, now, new stereo all wired in and working, but no start. notice a solid red light on the dash and after a bit of googling found that the original stereo has nats built into it or something, im in desperate need of help as its now off the road which also means im out of work, local stealers are not interested in helping and I also fear taking it to them will render me bankrupt, any help or suggestions will be gratefully received. thankyou

Welcome mate

We have been trying to diagnose another suspected NATS2 issue on another new members truck recently however he has a 2.7TDi Terrano rather than 3.0Di Patrol but to be honest the NATS element can't be too dissimilar.

Hopefully some of the Patrol members will be here in a while with some tips for you to try.

I certainly know that other Terrano owners that have the 1.5 DIN head-unit with the hazard switch built in that have tried to replace for a single DIN unit with a separate hazard switch have also induced these symptoms too.

Good luck

Hi swr123 and welcome, your best bet and the cheapest is to call out a car locksmith, after repeated start attempts you will be locked out on NATS, make sure you explain all that you have done, but basically he will hook up a computer and reprogram your keys etc, I had similar some time ago when I inadvertently used a non chipped key, 3 strikes and you are out, took the guy 20 mins to sort it and charged £60 which I thought was good as he had over an hours round trip to me, Rick

aggressive off road tyres on wheels so just swap.
Aim to get stuck and be completely self sufficient in extraction, love getting muddy, 2ft deep is good but rare.

i don't know if it makes any difference but the remote locking is still working okay, but the idea of an auto locksmith is definatly an avenue worth looking into, thankyou for your reply. adam

Have to say on my 3 litre Terrano i replaced factory stereo that had the hazard switch with a aftermarket head unit and had no issues with lockout.

Has battery been disconnected or been flat?

There’s a thread as mentioned by a new member literally just a few days ago with a terrano with similar symptoms as you and after a few posts he explains how he fixed it.

The remote locking system is totally different module so that will still work.

I've had my head unit out for days, had the battery disconnected for days and just the other week realized I'd left the boot light on and flattened the battery so much I had to key the door open and there was nothing when turning the ignition.
I charged the battery and everything is fine.
How the hell does this NATS work?

Is it possible to fit the original head unit back in and try?
I would, before parting with any cash.
Best of luck

Ian I think on a 2004 you might have NATS 3 which may well have eliminated the glitch on NATS 2, Rick

I've had a quick read of the Electrical section that all relates to NATS.

A lot of the diagnostic procedures that are outlined in there are reliant on you having a Consult II bit of kit.

I did read an interesting line through whereby if you do have a NATS lockout, the light will stay illuminated for 15 mins but after that time you will be able to start the car if you leave the ignition on?

Wish I had a car with the fault so I could go and play

Next breaker I get in, I might try and swap the IMMU on the ignition barrel and see what faults that induces

Default Mini Metro Rolling Codes just as bad.

My brother briefly owned a Metro MG ? Turbo that had some sort of fancy immobiliser.
He bought the Metro cheap as a short term run about until he could get the motor he was looking for.

It kept on immobilising at random times so he spent around £200 getting it removed / sorted. About two weeks later he found a motor and the day before he was selling it the head gasket blew!

He was not best pleased - sold as scrap.

I changed my Nissan stereo for an aftermarket one and fitted a home made facia panel with a hazard switch and have had no issues.
Factory wiring plugged straight in and I just piggy backed the wires for my hazard switch from the loom.
I think the installation of the new stereo is to blame for the Nats issue.

It's interesting as a lot of people point towards this and being the cause of the problem but even in the download there is no mention of the head unit at all in any of the NATS bits I read earlier

More reading has uncovered that if you swap the IMMU, you will need to re-pair the keys with it and the ECM, this again requires CONSULT II software. There are two types of IMMU, the big sticker on the top will either have an "A" or a "B" on it.

IF you have an "A" happy days, you run through the CONSULT II steps and when asked, your PIN is "5523" if you have a letter "B" you will need a combination of the 6 digit number next to the Siemens logo and then the lower 4 digit number in line with the "Made In Germany" line on the sticker.

These two numbers put together will then be enough for Nissan to generate you a PIN so you can re-pair, but again, needing CONSULT II
