When mine did it, it was 3 things, so took me a while to work out.

In my case, not only was the turbo leaking oil, but because of some scoring in the centre two piston walls, I have quite high chankcase pressure, and to make this worse, the blowby control valve had failed allowing the turbo to suck the oil vapour from the rocker cover at higher revs, where it would then re-condense in the rubber air tube that runs from the filter to the turbo. This tube has lots of little dimples inside, so it builds up a fair amount of oil over time, where it would then trickle to the bottom of the tube, especially when everything was up to temp, and oil was nice and runny, build up into a deep puddle where the tube joins the turbo, and then the trigger was normally braking as I was facing up hill, where the oil would pour into the turbo, and therefore be fed into the engine.

It did it a couple of times at junctions, but the worst was going up Riegate hill on the M25, where I was already going at just under 70, as everything in front of me started slowing down, my car suddenly started to accelerate hard and all the vehicles behind me disappeared in a huge cloud of smoke. Weird feeling when you car decides to drive it's self!

A new turbo, part fixed it, but then I discovered the issue with the blowby control valve, and put an oil catch can in, which drains back into the sump, and that stopped it completely.

Luckily my engine survived it.

Good luck mate, it's a scary feeling.

Nice write up and a good advert for an oil catch can

Hi Banshee,

All sounds rather Stressful, hope you and the girlfriend are okay.

If you were talking Brampton Cumbria i could of given you my parents No they are very very close and would of been good for a hot drink a warm welcome and a friendly face.
Did you get the truck recovered? If it is still up there and you want somewhere safe and free to park it let me know. My parents have loads of space.

To block the air intake.
When an engine runs on it can get upto 8000 rpm so something flat and solid that wont get sucked into the engine is needed.

Good advice if you have the presence of mind to use it, Rick

I see, my snorkel hurts my hand a bit at tickover, 8000rpm would probably suck the skin off my it

Hi Guys

Thanks for all the kind replies, we actually ended up getting back home at 4am on Saturday morning and the girlfriend is less than impressed also as we have booked the day off work today as we were still meant to be in Clacton

I've tried to start the truck since and it tried to overrun again but as I was expecting it I was quick with the 5th gear and clutch and it didn't even get chance to get to 2000rpm and I stalled it. It will sit there and tick over fine but spits oil out of the exhaust through the flexi from the front downpipe

I'm in too much trouble with the partner at the moment to be getting caught underneath the truck on the driveway until we're back at work, luckily I have her Fiesta to use next week

What's the best course of action here for me, should I be getting my turbo refurbished? Get a 2nd hand one which could be almost on it's way out too, I haven't really got the money at the moment to be investing in a brand new one

What's the drill with the Oil Catch can mod then, lets see some pics of what you guys have done

Get your insurance changed over to the 3 litre and give yourself plenty time to fix your truck and take the pressure off. Then the mrs can have her fiesta back. Have a break from the trucks and get back on track with everything else.

Personally I think I’d be looking at getting your turbo refurbed. As you say a second hand one could be about to give up as well.

Mate get your turbo refurbished. Plenty of good companies out there who do just that for not a lot of dosh really. I had mine done and went 360 bearings while I was at it. On my way to Greece at this moment but will try and find the link before we board.

I'm trying not to go down that route as I don't want to keep the 3 litre as it's just too good for me, I'd end up knocking it about if I came to use it day to day, it deserves a better owner.
