Snow chains
Anyone have any experience with snow chains. I am thinking of getting some for my truck just to use for an emergency.

Far too much hassle especially in this country where you could be constantly putting them on then taking them off, as you must not run very far on road with no snow, Rick

Top tip: if you decide on chains, put them on the night before a heavy snowfall. They're much easier to take off when not needed than putting on just brfore you need them. Where they are needed, they're brilliant. I eventually got rid of mine and bought some winter tyres, which were faultless. |

My only experience of snow chains cost me a pair of tyres... they really do cut the rubber up.
With 4wd, get some giant cable ties which you can put 4 or 5 round the wheel and tyres, which have the added advantage that when you get back on the good stuff, they will just wear off, so no need to stop. Personally, I carry a 5 litre container of grit. It's in a cleaned out plastic oil can, sort of container, which makes it easy to sprinkle. Even towing a van that was stuck, up hill, all I did was sprinkle some behind my wheels, roll back onto it, then sprinkle some in front of my wheels, and the vans. Once moving I just kept momentum up till we got back to the gritted road at the top of the hill. Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk |

Thanks all. I like the cable tie idea, & I agree that I need more aggressive tyres, my truck is mainly used for towing & goes off road most days.

I fancy some snow chains too, they probably aren't worth the hassle, until you're completely stuck and sat wishing you had some

Liquid Tyre Chain for Snow !
Back in 1966/7 when I was a teenager (18/19 years) I lived in the countryside (DE65JH) in the days when we had proper snow most winters.
My Dad had a company vehicle an Opel Rekord Coupe 1900 Auto and GM sold an Aerosol called liquid tyre chain - it worked ! You sprayed it on the tread if you lost grip and then you were off - sorted. He also had a set of studded rear tyres for when we got heavily snowed in. The studs were good on ice and packed snow but added nothing in snow except a lot of noise. |

That is certainly a very novel and interesting design, but I guess expensive, Rick
