We will remember them......
They went with songs to the battle, they were young, Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow. They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted; They fell with their faces to the foe. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. |

Thanks John, watching festival of remembrance now. Off to a local parade tomorrow with my sqn of air cadets and then if I’m able to my home town parade in the afternoon though if I’m not up to it I’ll have to be there in spirit.

Just got back from marshalling Chatham Remembrance parade. We were one of 2 sweep cars to protect the rear of the procession.
Today would also have been my Dad's birthday as well, so double remembrance for me. |

Well unfortunately as it turned out I wasn’t well enough to attend either of the parades which was disappointing but just one of those unavoidable things I guess.

Made me remember my late Mothers three brothers all killed in WW2
As some members may be already aware my Mum was Austrian she lived through the annexation of her country as a 11 year old Schoolgirl. My brother still has her copy of Mein Kampf - issued to all school children - its written in Gothic German so is not remotely readable with my limited knowledge of the language.
Her three older brothers were conscripted into the "Wehrmacht" - two in the "Heer" (Army) killed on the Russian Front - no bodies were ever repatriated, one was in the" Luftwaffe" as a Navigator shot down & buried in Crete. No choice it was Wehrmacht or a Labour/Death Camp. The youngest was just 17 years old - such a waste of life. That said had there not been the British Army on the Rhine in the post war occupation of Austria (1945-55)then my Mum would not have met my Dad who was stationed in Klagenfurt where I was subsequently born in 1948. My Dad went home on leave where he contracted TB from his family,Dad died when I was 5 months old. His father also died of TB in the same year but his younger brother survived and he is still alive - lives near Willenhall. |
