1.6efi Maestro, was that a mod as I had an auto 1.6 carb, and there was an MG 1.6 twin carb then 2.0efi. seem to think there was a rover 216 with 1.6 efi. follow a maestro/montego fb page and despite in 4x4s would love an AR MG.

My first car was a 1968 Morris 1800 landcrab automatic. Spent 6 month getting it ready for when I passed my test, and after just 3 months on the road it had broken down so many times I scrapped it and used it to repair a 1969 Austin 1800 landcrab manual with a stage 2 tuned engine (apparently).
After a couple of years I found a Barn stored low mileage 1974 Wolseley 2200 landcrab with all the trimmings. Loved that car, but had a head on with an Allegro that failed to give way on a narrow bridge, killing both cars majorly, and doing the driver of the Allegro a powet of no- good as well. Needed a car urgently so took my first foray into buying at auction... bad mistake... somehow came home with a 1980 florescent orange Princess automatic... nuff said. Traded that in for a 1983 Austin Meastro 1.3. I had the only good Austin Meastro ever made and had many years and a lot of miles out of that car. After wearing that out, traded it for a 1985 Toyota Corrola 1.3. That was another great car, but seemed unlucky, it was always being hit and repaired, but the final call came when a young girl in a Porsche 944 turned across me, at night with just 1 parking light and a low level fog light, both on the nearside. Both cars very written off, and she was uninsured. Inherited my late dad's Volvo 245, given to me by my mum as it was too big for her. It was so expensive to run, I traded it in for a 1989 Volvo 480. Loved that car, but it got me 9 points in 3 months... slowed down and while keeping that, got a company Suzuki Vitara 1.6 JLX LWB. At some point traded the 480 for a SJ413 softtop. Now that was a fun toy. Company Vitara became a 2.0 diesel. Split with GF who kept SJ so got a Volvo 850 I could tow the caravan with. Met new GF (Suz) who had Peugeot 306 gti? Very fast but kept goin wrong. She then had 2 480's, one of which was the 2.0 turbo Celebration. Company car became a Subaru Impreza 2.0 sport estate. Fun but I have never had such a bag of bones and problems, luckily they were all the companies problem to pay for. That became a series of Peugeot's all of which were nasty. Dumped company cars, traded the 850 for an 2002 Volvo V70 and used that for both personal and business mileage. That was a great car and I did nearly 300K miles in it before it was written off by insurance scammers. Suz inherted her dads old Volvo 240. Which we both used for a while, but the fuel costs and the way it tried to kill us towing the caravan, convinced us to look for a replacement. Got 1999 T2, and after a dodgy start, became a lover. Suz's 240 became 1984 T1, which then became a 2001 T2. Now we have my old T2, which I am reluctant to get rid of, Suz's T2, and my new favorite car ever, the Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.0CRD Limited. Suz is already eyeing up Wranglers to replace her T2. Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk |

Starting with car learnt to drive in but never owned myself, morris minor, had been
my grandfather's and my mum took it over on his passing. We had it refurbished in early 80s by a firm that came with good credentials but messed it up, seems they should have stuck to imps... later found a moggy place but writing was on wall. Second car I learnt to drive in, the moggy's replacement a mk2 escort estate as at time was a better long distance car., the moggy went for £200 in 1984! The Escort was first car I drove on road, on 17th birthday drove from Bridlington to M62. The Moggy was driven on private roads, training grounds and quiet cough industrial estates. Third in at time didn't own was auto Maestro which led to me buying my first car as needed a manual, and why pay for lessons when can plough into own car. So a further mk 2 escort estate aquired, this one an earlier one but as ex MoD was on Y reg suffix. Got me through test second time round just before 18th birthday. So liking Escorts along came a 1.3 4 door ghia, which was very proud of. Having bought a caravan and the escort not big enough took over Mum's Auto Maestro as she got another one few years younger. Moment of madness saw me jumping in and buying a Range Rover Classic which was a dog and a half, much welding later to rear chassis, and sills was a runner but had to go when bought a house and couldnt justify 2 money pits! Having married the car ownership shared, my Mrs had a Fiat 127 which for a 1050cc was quite a buzzy thing but didn't like starting in damp weather. We then bought a 2 litre Sierra 5 door, though it steadily rusted away, our mechanic sourced a new shell and switched the running gear over. The rebuilt Sierra tried to argue with a supertram so was was written off, the car that is so along came a late model Sierra 1.8LX, lovely car and almost as zippy as the 2L. Next came a Daewoo Nubira estate 2L which was our first with injection, lovely reliable motor even if lacked personality, never failed us and was very torquey, could start in 3rd.... First Nissan was a P reg mk2 5 door Terrano, which we loved, traded in after was written off and bought back for the Patrol which was our modern money pit. An amazing truck for space but someone had definitely been messing with the early ZD motor, cost us an engine rebuild and still was not right, let us down towing the twin axle caravan over Woodhead, and an expensive tow home as highlighted the breakdown cover hadnt renewed properly. With Trol back in garage what to do, well how about another 2.7 Terrano? So trade Trol for a 52 plate T2 which as they do never let us down really either, certainly never found on back of a tow truck. 3 years ago offered a 3L T2, well vowed never to have another ZD after Trol but realised the early issues were fixed and sure enough its been great. As per other thread got to think about its replacement at some point.

Wow you lot have had a lot of cars,
I have only had 4 cars. 1991 had a 2door mk3 escort GL 1996 had a Dacia duster. Bought with a seized engine which I replaced myself with a reconditioned Renault 12 engine. 2005ish a bmw 316 that quickly turned into a moneypit. And for the last 9 years my terrano. It’s now 15 years old and I don’t know how much longer it will be on the road as it’s not worth much and I am not flush for the foreseeable. Some git cracked the front bumper recently in a car park which vexes me as I have always looked after it. |

I worked in the car trade part time in the 1960's so I did have a higher turnover as I was doing a little trading to finance my car ownership being a poor student. Back in the 1960's as car ownership was expanding rapidly used car depreciation could be minimised with some astute purchasing & private sales were easy. |
